You’ll Never Get Hired by Media Two…

…by telling me how great you are, or how stupid someone else is or by showing me how many certifications you’ve achieved.  Believe it or not, I don’t really care about your resume either.  I glance at LinkedIn to get a feel for your experience simply to help with directional questions, but what I am looking for in a media hire is essentially three things:
  1. Does the potential media hire have drive?
  2. Does the potential media hire have intelligence?
  3. Does the potential media hire actually want to work with Media Two?

Media Buying Drive

If there is one thing that is 100% alike in the current personalities behind Media Two, it’s the drive each and every individual possesses.  If you’ve never worked a day in your life, and you apply to one of our most senior positions – I’ll consider you if you show me the initiative and the drive.  The drive to get things done, and get things done better than anyone else is key.  Whether it’s in a media buy, in hosting a lunch and learn for your coworkers, or simply wanting to learn everything you can from the industry – drive is what defines us here at Media Two.  We are a 10-person shop with large media clients for a reason, and if I could sum up our success in one word, that word would be drive.

Media Intelligence

I once asked a student applying for an internship who had a 3.95 GPA why they didn’t get a 4.0.  His response was “I really didn’t care that much, I wanted to take time for myself.” While I can appreciate wanting a work/life balance, the interview was abruptly ended when he muttered the fact that he didn’t try. I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying. To me, intelligence isn’t about your GPA, your IQ or any of the big words you throw out there – it’s about the questions you ask, the choices you make and the effort you put in. Show me your intelligence by asking good questions and not being afraid to fail or look stupid in your quest for more knowledge – but then just as importantly, follow up with your questions and show initiative to learn.

Apply for Media Two

In almost 20 years of running Media Two, I can tell you that I never get past 99% of the cover letters that come to me because although they are applying to Media Two, they really aren’t.  Allow me to explain…  Because we’re located in Raleigh, voted one of the best places to live, is not a reason to apply. Because you really want to be in media buying is not a reason either. Because you found out we take team trips to places like Disney and Atlantis… also not a reason. To be blunt – I don’t care in the interview process why you want to come work for us, I want to know what you can do to make us better. Once you are hired, then I obviously want to know what motivates you, but until then I want to know that you want to work with Media Two because you’ve learned we’re out in front of the industry with technology, beta-testing for Google, etc. I want to know that you thrive in a fast-paced environment and you live for working on clients that you are passionate about because you can see yourself making that client twice as successful. Help me picture you as part of our team, not just as someone that needs a job with the first company that will hire them, but someone that is interested in what we do and can make a difference. These are just three things that can help to get your foot in the door, not just with Media Two, but pretty much any company out there. I don’t need to be wowed or gimmicked into an interview, but I need to see a deep-rooted interest in the industry that we are so passionate about. I need to see that you’re in it to move the needle. How you package that is up to you and your own unique style – but I’m very interested to meet you, as we are looking for our next media hire.

  1. It’s hard to show my drive through my portfolio or in a few small paragraphs but I can try my best and I will share a story with you.
The summer after my sophomore year of high school, I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease, Lupus. This brought on a lot of different challenges including rheumatoid arthritis in the majority of my joints, weakened immune system, depression, all that fun stuff. I’ve been struggling with this disease for 8 years now and it has gotten easier and I wouldn’t be who I am now without it.
This past summer I took part in an internship with Spot Media Production Group in St. Louis, Missouri. During my first interview I was told that at the end of the summer, I needed to produce a final project. After a little thought I decided that doing a PSA on something personal would be the way to go.
After three months of planning, writing, shooting, and editing, I finished my PSA on Lupus Awareness. I showed it to the company and everyone loved it and my supervisor convinced me to send it to the Lupus Foundation of American to see what they thought. The local St. Louis chapter picked it up for their social media and now, it has been playing during a St. Louis Saturday morning show every week, and has been featured on numerous Lupus Awareness news specials throughout the city.
Being a recent college graduate, I’m aware that my resume isn’t the most impressive and I don’t have the years of experience like others do but my drive and passion for this industry can make up for that. I can add a different train of thought into any discussion and I believe I would be a great addition to Media Two’s team and am willing to learn the ins and outs of this company.
